Many of us live in small apartments. That doesn’t mean we can’t live life to its fullest. From combining rooms to installing built-in furniture, to the strategic use of paint and light, small rooms can be made to look larger. A Persian carpet is another option. In general, a rug that sits under the furniture draws the eye across the width of the space and creates a distinguishable focal point.
This neutral dining room may be pretty basic in color palette, but it’s certainly heavy on the details. The box beam ceiling, chair rail, sconces, chandelier all bring the large space down to a cozier level. But because the edges and surfaces are hard (with the exception of those beautiful velvet chairs), the rug is an important component in softening the space, visually and acoustically. The contemporary pattern is busy enough to handle minor kid spills, but anything outside the two tones in the rug would likely stand out.
An antique rug might make you think of a traditionally designed room, but it can also be Mediterranean. If you choose such a rug for this type of room, opt for furniture that is striking. The pieces you choose work best when they contain colors that reflect the rug’s color palette. For instance, a deep blue chair can pick up the blue that is in the rug, creating synchronicity.
Rugs can be used to separate or define spaces in the same place. For example, you can easily separate your working area from the dining area in the kitchen by using two different rugs. When you will use more than one rug in your kitchen, be sure to choose them of different sizes because same-sized rugs will visually divide your room by half. On the other hand, in case of using multiple rugs, be sure that their styles harmonize with each other. Too many warring patterns and clashing styles can destroy the sense of harmony and create a jarring effect.
