Natural stone refers to a variety of materials which are extracted from the earth and then processed into architectural elements. This is important because different types of stone will have different properties. Marble and onyx, for instance, are very soft, easily scratched, and can be stained by liquid agents.
One of the major advantages to choosing hard tile floors for pet populated public areas is that they are very simple to clean. There are few detergents out there that can damage a ceramic tile’s glaze, so you will be able to use heavy duty soaps to disinfect the space. At the same time, the hard surface acts like a shield, holding any unseemly materials in place ready to easily be wiped or mopped up.
Ceramic tiles are made primarily from red or white clay mixed with various minerals and water. This composition is then processed with heat to create the solidified product. Since ceramic material is porous, the top surface is usually sealed with a glaze. The glazed surface is referred to as the design layer since it determines the tile’s finished color, design and texture. In other words, ceramic tiles only have the design or color that you see on the top layer, not all the way through the tile.
Ceramics are also "natural" in that they are made from natural clay materials, but they are manufactured by humans through a process of casting and firing. They are more durable, and easier to maintain than natural stone tiles, as they can be made permanently impervious to moisture through glazing.
